Be a Part of History in the Making

First Dance, a new play by Trevor Copp, Jeff Fox, and Lisa O’Connell explores the significance of a time-honoured ritual that for so many has no history.

‘First Dance’ is about a gay man getting married.  It is three months after gay marriage becomes legal in Canada, and his friend and Professional Ballroom dance partner Jeff is helping him devise the first dance. Together, they set about creating a dance for a ritual that has no history.

Performances are August 18-20, 25-27, 8pm at the Burlington Student Theatre Centre and tickets are on sale now for $20 HERE.

In several countries and and now one state, gay marriage has been legalised. The struggle for a global community has been long, hard and is still far from over. Within this issue, there is the inter-personal ramification of how we reinvent tradition to represent a new equality. It isn’t the marriage, the union itself that necessarily needs re-creation, but the nuts and bolts of the ceremony itself. The most powerfully gender structured event that seems insurmountable is surprising. It isn’t the vows, it isn’t the sensational kiss. It is the first dance.

At the season launch, Brenda Heatherington, the Executive Director of The Burlington Performing Arts Centre, announced that their 2011-2012 line up includes a Co-Production with Tottering Biped Theatre to present ‘The Last 15 Seconds!’

An upcoming play about gay marriage and ballroom dance aims to challenge the strict gender roles found in the world of ballroom, and explores how a gay couple adds a unique twist to one of society’s grandest traditions.

“I see [ballroom dance] as a final frontier for heterosexism, and my aim is to ensure there is no remaining space where a gay or alternative couple in any sense doesn’t feel welcome,” said Trevor Copp, creator of and performer in First Dance, which runs August 18-20 and 25-27 at the Burlington Student Theatre Centre…

Good theatre, a teacher of mine once told me, is dangerous, and David Harrower’s play Blackbird, currently in production at Burlington’s Tottering Biped theatre, is exactly that.

The play rests on a confrontation between Ray and Una, a man and woman who had an affair 15 years previous. He was 40. She was 12. He has been in prison. And changed his name, too, unsurprisingly.

He was careless enough to be photographed for a trade journal, celebrating the work he’s done at his new job, where his past is unknown, and now Una has tracked him down. She doesn’t seem to want revenge exactly, but the meeting is explosively dangerous, and that makes for great theatre...
